A 7-day trip is the sweet spot for Hurghada. Five days is not enough — you will feel rushed and either skip Luxor or skip the diving. Two weeks is the right amount of time for a long-stay or digital nomad, but most European visitors have one week of annual leave and want to use it well. This is the 2026 first-timer itinerary: a day-by-day plan that hits the highlights (beaches, snorkeling, Luxor, diving), with realistic time budgets, the right order to book things, and what to skip if you only have 5 days. The plan assumes you arrive in the morning (most European flights land between 06:00 and 14:00), and that you want a mix of beach, water, history, and culture. The short answer

• Day 1: Arrive, settle in, beach at the resort, early dinner, early bed. Recover from the flight.
• Day 2: Snorkeling day trip to Giftun Island. First real water time. Easy, fun, low-effort.
• Day 3: Luxor day trip by air. The big history day. Long but worth it.
• Day 4: Recover from Luxor. Pool day + sunset sail + dinner in El Gouna or Sahl Hasheesh.
• Day 5: Intro scuba or PADI Open Water Day 1+2. The defining Hurghada experience for most first-timers.
• Day 6: Cairo day trip by air OR a second dive day. Your call based on energy.
• Day 7: Final morning swim, pack, late checkout if available, transfer to the airport.

Day 1: Arrival, settle in, recover

Most European flights land at Hurghada International Airport (HRG) between 06:00 and 14:00. The airport is small and well-organized. From the gate to the taxi rank is 10–15 minutes including baggage claim. From the airport to your hotel is 20–60 minutes depending on where you are staying (central Hurghada 20 min, Sahl Hasheesh 30 min, El Gouna 45 min, Makadi 60 min).

What to do today:

• Get from the airport to your hotel. The four reliable options (official taxi, pre-booked private transfer, Careem/inDrive, hotel pickup) are covered in our Hurghada airport transfer guide. Budget $10–$25 for a private car, $5–$10 for a taxi.
• Eat a real meal. Hurghada food is fresh and good — Egyptian mezze, grilled fish, ful medames. Your hotel restaurant will be the easy option; a local Hurghada seafood restaurant (the Hurghada Old Town strip, or the Sahl Hasheesh promenade) is better if you can get there.
• Walk the beach at sunset. The first evening is a good time to do a 30-minute beach walk and orient yourself to the property.
• Sleep early. The next day starts with an early boat departure.

Day 2: Snorkeling day trip to Giftun Island

The first real water day. Giftun is a national park 30 minutes by boat from Hurghada marina, with shallow reefs, clear water, and white-sand beaches. The standard day-trip format: 08:00 boat departure, 60–90 minutes of snorkeling in protected water, lunch on board, second snorkeling stop, back at the marina by 16:00. Cost: $25–$45 per person including all equipment, lunch, and the national park fee.

What to expect: You will see coral, parrotfish, butterflyfish, and on a good day a hawksbill turtle. You do NOT need any experience. The boat crew will fit you with a mask, snorkel, fins, and a life jacket. The water is 26–28°C in summer, 22–24°C in winter. Bring sunscreen, a towel, and a waterproof phone case if you want photos.

What NOT to do today: Diving. The boat motion + sun + first day in the water is fine for snorkeling but not ideal for scuba. Save that for Day 5.

Day 3: Luxor day trip by air

The big history day. Luxor is 280 km south of Hurghada (3.5 hours by car, 55 minutes by air). The standard day-trip format: 04:00 hotel pickup, transfer to the airport, 06:00–07:00 flight to Luxor, full guided day on the West Bank (Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut, Colossi of Memnon) and East Bank (Karnak, Luxor Temple), 19:00–21:00 flight back to Hurghada, hotel by 22:00–23:00. Cost: $180–$240 per person including flights, all entry fees, guide, and lunch.

What to expect: You will see the Valley of the Kings (3 tombs included in the standard ticket, the most famous pharaonic burial site in Egypt), the Temple of Hatshepsut (the most dramatic of the West Bank temples), the Colossi of Memnon (two 18-meter seated statues), Karnak (the largest religious building ever constructed, including the famous Hypostyle Hall with 134 columns), and Luxor Temple (smaller than Karnak but beautifully preserved, in the middle of the modern city). How to book: Viator or GetYourGuide the night before. The flight-based tour is significantly more expensive than the bus-based tour ($180 vs $80) but worth the 6 hours of round-trip driving saved. The bus-based tour works for the cost-conscious but is genuinely exhausting.

Day 4: Recover from Luxor. Pool day + sunset sail + dinner out

You will be tired from Day 3. The right answer is a quiet day: lazy morning, pool or beach at the resort, optional spa treatment in the afternoon, sunset sail or sunset dinner in the evening. The sunset sails depart Hurghada marina at 16:00 and return at 19:00, $30–$60 per person with drinks and snacks. Most resort concierges can book this the morning of.

Alternative for Day 4 (diver variant): If you are on the PADI Open Water course (Day 1 = Day 5 of the trip), Day 4 becomes a pool-skills day and Day 5 becomes the first open-water dive. Talk to your dive shop the day before about rescheduling.

Dinner recommendation: Take a taxi or Careem to Sahl Hasheesh promenade (30 min from central Hurghada, free) or El Gouna marina (45 min, also free). Both have a wider range of restaurants than the typical hotel buffet, including Italian, Lebanese, Egyptian, Indian, sushi. The taxi back is $10–$15; some restaurants will call a taxi for you.

Day 5: Intro scuba diving (or PADI Open Water Day 1+2)

This is the day that converts most first-timers into regular divers. The standard Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) program: 30 minutes of pool theory in the morning, 1 shallow open-water dive from a boat in the afternoon. Cost: $65–$90 per person including all equipment, instructor, and the boat. No certification, no exam, no commitment. Most people who do this sign up for the full PADI Open Water course by the end of the day.

What to expect: You will descend to 5–12 metres, your instructor will hold your arm the whole time, and you will see coral and fish in a way that snorkeling cannot approach. The pool session is dry and educational (regulator, mask clear, buoyancy); the open-water dive is the actual experience. Most divers describe the first 30 seconds underwater as “life-changing.”

Day 6: Cairo day trip by air OR second dive day

Day 6 is the wild card. Most first-timers pick one of two options:

Option A: Cairo day trip by air. Cairo is 450 km north of Hurghada (6 hours by car, 1 hour by air). The standard day-trip: 04:00 pickup, 06:00 flight, full day at Giza (pyramids + Sphinx + Grand Egyptian Museum), 21:00 flight back, hotel by 23:00. Option C (less common): Day trip to Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna, or a Hurghada cooking class. Real, but for a first-timer the time is better spent on one of the two above.

Day 7: Final morning + departure

The standard departure: most flights back to Europe leave between 11:00 and 16:00. The realistic departure timeline is 06:00 wake-up, 07:00 breakfast, 08:00 final swim or beach walk, 09:00 pack and check out, 10:00 transfer to the airport (allow 2 hours before international flight), 12:00–14:00 departure.

Tip: If your flight is in the evening (16:00–22:00), use the morning for one last swim or a walk along the beach, then check out at 11:00, store your bags at the hotel reception, and pick them up on the way to the airport. Most Hurghada hotels offer free bag storage for late checkouts.

Cost breakdown (mid-range, 2 adults, 7 days)

• Day trip to Luxor (Day 3): $180–$240 per person ($360–$480 total). Flight-based, includes all entry fees + guide + lunch.
• Day trip to Cairo (Day 6, if you pick this): $180–$240 per person ($360–$480 total).

Family variant (with kids under 12)

The structure above works for families, but the day order changes:

• Day 2: Replace the Giftun boat trip with a beach day at the resort (kids are usually too tired to enjoy a full-day boat on Day 2). Use the resort pool and beach instead.
• Day 3: Skip Luxor (too long and too much walking for young kids). Replace with a half-day visit to Hurghada Grand Aquarium ($25 per family) or the Hurghada Sand City ($10 per family). Both are 2–3 hours, low-effort, and family-friendly.
• Day 4: Boat trip to a calm snorkeling site (Giftun or Mahmya) — shorter version, 4–5 hours, kid-friendly. Skip the sunset sail; the bedtime routine matters more with kids.
• Day 5: Glass-bottom boat or submarine — low-effort, kid-friendly, no water skill required.
• Day 6: Sahl Hasheesh promenade + beach day + dinner at a kid-friendly restaurant (most of Sahl Hasheesh is family-friendly).
• Day 7: Pool morning + departure as planned.

The budget is the same ($2,500–$4,000 total for a family of 4, since the kid-friendly swaps cost about the same as the day-trip-heavy version).

Diver variant (full PADI Open Water)

If you are coming to Hurghada specifically to get certified, the 7-day plan changes significantly:

• Days 1–2: Same arrival + Giftun snorkeling (the snorkeling previews what you will see on the dives).
• Day 3: Skip Luxor. Use it as a home-study day for the 5 PADI theory modules (PADI Touch app on your phone).

• Day 7: 18-hour no-fly time after the last dive means your return flight should be Day 8 at the earliest. Add a 7th night to your booking and fly out Day 8.

Cost: +$300–$450 per person for the PADI course. You lose Luxor and Cairo, but you gain a certification that is valid for life.

What to pack (and what not to)

• Pack: Reef-safe sunscreen (the Hurghada reefs are protected; chemical sunscreens are banned in some sites), a rash guard or light long-sleeve for snorkeling, a hat, polarized sunglasses, motion sickness pills if you are prone (the boats rock on Day 2 + Day 3), comfortable walking shoes for Luxor and Cairo, modest covering for Luxor and Cairo temples (shoulders + knees).
• Don’t pack: Heavy camera gear (your phone is fine for snorkeling and tours), dress shoes (you will never wear them), more than 2 swimsuits (the hotel laundry will turn around 1 overnight), hair dryer (every hotel has one).
