Snorkeling in Hurghada: 2026 Guide to the Best House Reefs, Boat Trips & Shore Dives

The Red Sea is one of the most reliable places in the world to throw on a mask, stick your face in the water and see something extraordinary within 30 seconds. More than 1,200 fish species, 200 of them only found here, water that is clear 30–50 metres, and average temperatures of 24–29°C year-round. This is the 2026 guide to the best snorkel spots in Hurghada, Sahl Hasheesh, El Gouna and Makadi — from house reefs you can reach in flip-flops to full-day boat trips to Giftun Island.

1. Shore snorkeling (no boat, no guide, free)

Most of our MAMO Property apartments sit on stretches of coast with their own house reef. You can walk into the water from the resort jetty or beach and reach interesting coral within 5–15 metres of the shore. Expect to see: parrotfish, butterflyfish, lionfish (careful — spines), pufferfish, occasionally a hawksbill turtle, and in deeper patches a Napoleon wrasse or a giant moray.

  • Sahl Hasheesh promenade — the public pier at the end of the walkway has the easiest entry, with a sandy patch that turns to coral at about 8 m depth.
  • Mamsha (Hurghada) beach clubs — most offer day passes from EGP 200–500 if you want a sunbed, towel and restaurant for the day. Reef is shallow, ideal for beginners.
  • Makadi Bay — protected bay, the gentlest conditions on this list. Visibility is lower than Sahl Hasheesh but the coral is denser.
  • El Gouna — Mangroovy Beach — house reef at the southern end, sometimes a spotted eagle ray drifts past at 12–15 m.

Bring your own mask and snorkel (rentals at the resort work but fit poorly). A 3mm shorty wetsuit is enough for July–October; a 5mm full wetsuit from November to March.

2. Giftun Island national park

The classic day trip. Boats leave Hurghada marina around 08:00, anchor in a protected bay on the west side of Giftun, and you have 60–90 minutes of snorkeling in water so clear you can see your shadow on the sand 8 m below. Lunch on board, second snorkeling stop, back by 16:00. Standard price in 2026: USD 25–45 per person including lunch, soft drinks, mask & fins.

Check whether the operator includes the national park fee (~USD 5) in the advertised price. Some online operators charge it on the boat in cash. Book through Viator or GetYourGuide for free 24-hour cancellation.

3. Mahmya Island (the upscale Giftun option)

The same Giftun reef, but with a private island set-up: thatched umbrellas, a proper restaurant, lockers, longer snorkeling time, and a glass-bottom boat tour for non-swimmers. USD 65–90 per person including transfers, lunch and drinks. Worth it for a honeymoon or if you want a quieter day without the party-boat crowd.

4. Dolphin House (Samadai / Shaab El Samadai)

About 1.5 hours by boat south of Hurghada. The reef has a resident pod of spinner dolphins — in 2026 the marine-park rules forbid boats from entering the dolphin pod, but you can snorkel on the perimeter. Success rate on seeing dolphins: 70–80% in calm weather, 50% in choppy conditions. USD 50–75 per person, including 2 snorkel stops and lunch.

Important: the marine-park rangers in 2024 started fining boats that chase the dolphins, and they limited visitor numbers. Book with a licensed operator (Viator, GetYourGuide, or a local that the apartment team can recommend).

5. Abu Ramada & the Small Giftun drift

For confident snorkellers and divers. The current is mild but constant, so you drift along a coral wall in about 25 minutes. Schools of jacks, barracuda, occasional trevally. Most operators only run this as a guided trip from a small RIB — check that you are comfortable with the pace before booking.

6. Scuba diving — for those who want to go deeper

If you have never dived, every resort in Hurghada runs a Discover Scuba (DSD) program: 30 min pool theory + 1 shallow open-water dive, usually at the house reef, for USD 65–90. Most people who try this end up doing the full PADI Open Water course by day 3.

For certified divers, Hurghada has 60+ named dive sites within an hour by boat. The most famous: Thistlegorm wreck (a WW2 British cargo ship with motorbikes and trucks still in the holds), the Rosalie Moller (sister wreck), and the Elphinstone offshore reef (advanced — currents and sharks).

7. Liveaboard multi-day trips

If you are a serious diver and have 4–7 days to spare, the Brothers Islands, Daedalus and Elphinstone liveaboards are the gold standard. Twin-share cabin from USD 1,200 for 4 nights all-inclusive. Book 3–6 months in advance for peak season (April–October).

Snorkel gear checklist (rent vs. bring)

  • Mask + snorkel + fins: USD 8–15/day to rent at the resort; USD 60–120 to buy your own (Cressi, Mares, SEAC all available in Hurghada downtown).
  • Reef shoes: USD 10–15 — highly recommended, the entry from the jetty can be sharp.
  • UV rashguard: bring from home, Hurghada shops are overpriced.
  • Waterproof phone pouch: USD 5 at any pharmacy. Take your GoPro with a red filter — the blue/green cast at 3 m+ will ruin your photos.

Snorkeling safety in the Red Sea

Three rules to keep your day perfect:

  1. Never stand on coral. Even one step breaks decades of growth and exposes you to fire-coral stings.
  2. Do not touch marine life. Lionfish, stonefish, scorpionfish, and the occasional sea urchin will defend themselves.
  3. Use the buddy system. Hire a lifeguard-supervised boat — the Red Sea is calm but the currents around Giftun and the Brothers can surprise you.
